Summary

Gilda, a twenty-something atheist, animal-loving lesbian, cannot stop ruminating about death。 Desperate for relief from her panicky mind and alienated from her repressive family, she responds to a flyer for free therapy at a local Catholic church, and finds herself being greeted by Father Jeff, who assumes she’s there for a job interview。 Too embarrassed to correct him, Gilda is abruptly hired to replace the recently deceased receptionist Grace。

In between trying to memorize the lines to Catholic mass, hiding the fact that she has a new girlfriend, and erecting a dirty dish tower in her crumbling apartment, Gilda strikes up an e-mail correspondence with Grace’s old friend。 She can’t bear to ignore the kindly old woman, who has been trying to reach her friend through the church inbox, but she also can’t bring herself to break the bad news。 Desperate, she begins impersonating Grace via e-mail。 But when the police discover suspicious circumstances surrounding Grace’s death, Gilda may have to finally reveal the truth of her mortifying existence。

A delightful blend of warmth, deadpan humor, and pitch-perfect observations about the human condition, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead is a crackling exploration of what it takes to stay afloat in a world where your expiration—and the expiration of those you love—is the only certainty。

This is it, the book I’ve been looking forward to!This is the anxious, depressed, but comical novel I have been looking for。 Ironic, short, and sweet overall。Gilda, the main character, is relatable。 She thinks a lot of the meaning of life, the little things, and people’s feelings。 She has a hard time saying no, or disappointing people, which gets her in unfortunate situations。 She cares too much, which sometimes comes off as not caring at all。I loved this。 I will read, and re-read it over again。 This is it, the book I’ve been looking forward to!This is the anxious, depressed, but comical novel I have been looking for。 Ironic, short, and sweet overall。Gilda, the main character, is relatable。 She thinks a lot of the meaning of life, the little things, and people’s feelings。 She has a hard time saying no, or disappointing people, which gets her in unfortunate situations。 She cares too much, which sometimes comes off as not caring at all。I loved this。 I will read, and re-read it over again。 There are some content warnings that I will include below。。。。。。。。。。CW: Alcoholism, depression, anxiety/panic attacks, gaslighting, suicidal thoughts/ideation, religion, murder, homophobia, hospitals, vomiting。 。。。more

Either Emily Austin is a hypochondriac or she did her research。 Every single thought Gilda had has gone through my mind at one point。 I think what fell short for me in this book was it seemed to go nowhere。 Many reviewers are calling it “depressing” which I absolutely did not think it was but that perhaps could be because Gilda was so relatable for me。

QuirkyVery depressing to begin with but around halfway it seemed to get better, I found it a decent enough read。

Disliked this book but stuck it out hoping it would be worth the time invested。 It was not。

This book was an immersive look at depression, which naturally made it an uncomfortable read at times。 There were some unexpected twists along the way that pulled me in, but the pacing seemed a bit off—the crescendos just seem to trickle away with no huge consequences。 I did, however, like the voice of the novel, and there were some sweet moments of distilled human goodness。 Seeing as this is the author’s first novel, I will be interested to see what she writes next!

Atheist lesbian Gilda is inadvertently hired to replace the recently deceased receptionist at a Catholic church。 This debut showed great promise and was truly a (URN) unreliable narrator who had some challenges functioning in the real world。 Hilarious voice as Gilda navigates her unraveling life with her parents, brother, girlfriend, and co-workers。 There are delightful minefields of philosophical musings that explode in the meandering stream-of-consciousness about death, religion, social mores, Atheist lesbian Gilda is inadvertently hired to replace the recently deceased receptionist at a Catholic church。 This debut showed great promise and was truly a (URN) unreliable narrator who had some challenges functioning in the real world。 Hilarious voice as Gilda navigates her unraveling life with her parents, brother, girlfriend, and co-workers。 There are delightful minefields of philosophical musings that explode in the meandering stream-of-consciousness about death, religion, social mores, and mostly death, while Austin examines what it means to be truly alive。 Canadian place could have been any small town anywhere but the descriptions of the church, Gilda's apartment, the interactions with medical personal, and other setting details and the supporting players come alive。 The ending was not a satisfactory one for me--not that I wanted the HEA (happily-ever-after), I appreciate the realism of the ending。 It was just a jarring transition that needed a little something more。 Perhaps the author felt that the abrupt transition spoke for itself (or Gilda spoke for herself) and maybe for other readers it will be enough--I, however, just felt for such a short, glowing narrative the ending lacked emotional closure。 But maybe that's the point。 Impressive debut nevertheless。 With LOL dark, edgy humor。 Some are comparing it to Honeywell's Eleanor Oliphant and I get why but I think the analogy makes sense for the URN, the humor, and tone but will not appeal to those readers who want Honeywell's narrative structure。 I did howl at loud multiple times。 。。。more

In the unlikely detective genre。 This one did not quite make it to funny but it was an interesting view into the life of the anxious。

3 1/2 stars。 This book reminded me a lot of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine。 It’s not quite as good。 The protagonist, Gilda, is likable and funny。 It is troubling that despite frequent Emergency Room visits the poor woman doesn’t get the mental help she clearly needs。 Her observations of church are hilarious。 A fun read for sure。

this book focuses on gilda, a depressed lesbian woman in her mid/late twenties who picks up a job at a church, despite being atheist。 her mind is bombarded with intrusive thoughts, especially fixations on death。 I thought the shattered narrative tended to work in the book’s favor, though at times it felt a little jumpy。 I wish the other characters, including her family and partner, were fleshed out à bit more。 this book isn’t for everyone but would rec to people who struggle with anxiety/depress this book focuses on gilda, a depressed lesbian woman in her mid/late twenties who picks up a job at a church, despite being atheist。 her mind is bombarded with intrusive thoughts, especially fixations on death。 I thought the shattered narrative tended to work in the book’s favor, though at times it felt a little jumpy。 I wish the other characters, including her family and partner, were fleshed out à bit more。 this book isn’t for everyone but would rec to people who struggle with anxiety/depression, or those who seek out stories with LGBTQ characters 。。。more

I adored this book。 The dark humour and the portrayal of anxiety were perfect for me。 At the same time, this is definitely not a book I’d recommend to everyone。

A great book about a twenty-something woman with mental health issues navigating life as best she can。At times it was hilarious, at times painful and overall quite nerve-wracking。 I loved her bleak commentary about life and especially her thoughts on the life-coach, OMG yes!! But I also stressed a lot! I could see everything ending so badly and felt so horribly for her even though had the sh!t hit the fan for her, she probably wouldn't have really cared。 Very well done, I felt it all to my bones A great book about a twenty-something woman with mental health issues navigating life as best she can。At times it was hilarious, at times painful and overall quite nerve-wracking。 I loved her bleak commentary about life and especially her thoughts on the life-coach, OMG yes!! Why is this book considered endearing and funny? Anxiety of this level that isn't treated is not funny。 I read it to the end because to not do so would bother me, but being someone who suffers from anxiety, I did not like it in the least。 Why is this book considered endearing and funny? Loved the synopsis of the book…。 Did not love the book。 Was constantly waiting for things to pickup, and for something to happen to keep me intrigued or curious, but it never got to that point。 The character development besides the main character was flat, and the plot did not keep me engaged。

Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC: this book grew on me: it's a stream of consciousness memoir style novel from a troubled woman who is seeking help and turns to a church and ends up working there, despite not being Catholic and hiding that she is gay。 As you learn from an unreliable narrator, so much does not become clear until the book is completed。 Her many, many visits to the ER surprised me, but then I learned she's in Toronto。 Here in the US, the copays would be prohibitive。 Mental health car Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC: this book grew on me: it's a stream of consciousness memoir style novel from a troubled woman who is seeking help and turns to a church and ends up working there, despite not being Catholic and hiding that she is gay。 As you learn from an unreliable narrator, so much does not become clear until the book is completed。 Her many, many visits to the ER surprised me, but then I learned she's in Toronto。 Here in the US, the copays would be prohibitive。 Mental health care is hard to access in any country and she struggles and tries so hard。 I grew frustrated with Gilda, the narrator, but that was a sign of the realistic portrayal of a woman struggling with depression。 It's an accurate representation and worth reading。 Withhold judgement until you've read it all and let it sit for a day。 Darkly humorous。 。。。more

3。5 stars。Love that it was Canadian。 It was very relatable。 I heard myself in the voice of Gilda, especially when I was her age。 Sure it's a bit depressing, but sometimes life is, and we can see that Gilda is slowly crawling back out of it and for that I am pleased and feel like it's going to be okay。 It might not be great, but it's going to be okay。 3。5 stars。Love that it was Canadian。 It was very relatable。 I heard myself in the voice of Gilda, especially when I was her age。 Sure it's a bit depressing, but sometimes life is, and we can see that Gilda is slowly crawling back out of it and for that I am pleased and feel like it's going to be okay。 It might not be great, but it's going to be okay。 。。。more

I loved this book although I can see why many readers will have the opposite reaction。 I’ve seen reviewers who say it’s depressing but while there is a lot of sadness and difficulty I found it more uplifting。The protagonist Gilda is a young gay woman suffering from crippling anxiety but is also one of the most endearing characters I’ve read in a long time。 All through I found myself rooting for her to overcome her issues and find happiness。 The book concludes with a happier ending。 Or is it?

I couldn’t put this book down。 Ironically I’ve been having a lot of anxiety and panic attacks and found this book oddly comforting。 It was laugh out loud funny at times and I appreciated that。

3。75 StarsGilda is a young gay woman dealing with anxiety and depression, after recently being fired from her job she unwittingly gets a job at a Catholic Church。 The whole book is written as a stream of consciousness, with Gilda frequently bouncing around topics or zoning out of conversations。 While she's a well meaning person, often times she doesn't treat the people around her well or she goes about doing things for them the wrong way。 Still, I did find myself wanting to read on and the story 3。75 StarsGilda is a young gay woman dealing with anxiety and depression, after recently being fired from her job she unwittingly gets a job at a Catholic Church。 The whole book is written as a stream of consciousness, with Gilda frequently bouncing around topics or zoning out of conversations。 While she's a well meaning person, often times she doesn't treat the people around her well or she goes about doing things for them the wrong way。 Still, I did find myself wanting to read on and the story went quite quickly。 I think for me, I just found myself not as connected to the characters as maybe I would have liked to have been。 Especially the side characters they felt a bit flat maybe because Gilda wasn't very present in her own life let alone the lives of her friends/family。 Still, the story was interesting and the writing style was something I don't often go for。 。。。more

I was expecting to be reading a murder mystery with very comedic elements。 However, it heavily focused on mental health and other mature topics with some comedy sprinkled throughout the book。 As someone who is going to university to become a psychologist and as someone who deals with anxiety, I appreciate the representation and the de-stigmatizing of such a heavy topic。 I also liked how there was LGBTQ+ representation as well, as the main character was a lesbian。 For the most part, however, I kinda found the book to be a bit boring and monotone at times。 The ending and the character development was really good though! I personally wouldn’t reach for this book again but it was still a good read! 。。。more
